WME Exam Prep (2026): Format, Case Study & How to Study

The short answer: Wealth Management Essentials (WME) is assessed with two proctored 3-hour exams — a general-knowledge multiple-choice exam and a case-study exam. It builds on the Canadian Securities Course and is commonly required for licensed advisors who manage client wealth. This page explains the format and how to prepare for both parts.

What is the WME?

Wealth Management Essentials (WME) deepens the knowledge an advisor needs to manage clients' wealth rather than simply execute trades. It builds on the Canadian Securities Course (CSC), taking the foundations you learned there and extending them into practical wealth-management topics such as working with clients, managing portfolios, and applying financial planning ideas in real situations.

For many licensed advisors, the WME is a required step — a course you complete after you're already licensed, to formalise the wealth-management side of your role.

WME exam format

The WME stands out because it has two separate proctored exams, and one of them is a case study rather than a standard multiple-choice test:

The general-knowledge exam tests your grasp of the core material in a familiar multiple-choice format. The case-study exam is different: instead of isolated facts, you work through realistic client scenarios and apply what you know to a situation — the kind of judgement an advisor uses every day. Preparing for the case study means practising how to apply concepts, not just recall them.

Who takes the WME?

The WME is aimed at licensed investment advisors advancing their wealth-management expertise. Typical candidates are already working in the industry and need the WME to:

How to prepare

Because the WME has two very different exams, your prep should have two gears. For the general-knowledge exam, the reliable method is repetition: work through the material, then drill practice questions until the concepts feel automatic. For the case-study exam, focus on application — practise connecting concepts to client situations so you can reason through a scenario under time pressure.

Strong practice on the multiple-choice side frees up mental energy for the case study, because the fundamentals become second nature. That's where SmartExam helps.
